Container Devanning Explained: What UK Importers Need to Know

What Is Container Devanning?
Container devanning — also called stripping or unstuffing — is the process of unloading goods from a shipping container after it arrives at a UK warehouse. For importers bringing goods into the country from suppliers in China, India, Bangladesh, Turkey, or elsewhere, devanning is the critical first step in getting products from the port to your customers.
It sounds simple, but devanning done poorly leads to damaged stock, inaccurate inventory records, and delays that ripple through your entire supply chain. This guide explains the process, what affects costs, and what to look for in a devanning partner.
The Container Devanning Process
Step 1: Container Arrival
Your container arrives at the warehouse on the back of a haulage vehicle, having been collected from the port (typically Felixstowe, Tilbury, Southampton, or London Gateway). The warehouse books a delivery slot and prepares a dock door for the vehicle.
Timing matters: Most hauliers charge waiting time (demurrage) if the container cannot be unloaded promptly. A well-organised warehouse will have your slot ready and begin unloading within 30 minutes of arrival.
Step 2: Unloading
The container doors are opened and goods are physically removed. This may involve:
- Floor-loaded containers — goods packed loose inside the container without pallets. These require manual handling, sorting, and palletising. This is the most labour-intensive and time-consuming method.
- Palletised containers — goods already on pallets inside the container. These can be unloaded with a forklift much more quickly.
- Mixed loads — a combination of palletised and loose goods.
A standard 40ft floor-loaded container typically takes 2–4 hours to devan, depending on the nature of the goods. A palletised container can be unloaded in 30–60 minutes.
Step 3: Checking and Quality Inspection
As goods are unloaded, they are checked against the packing list and commercial invoice. This stage catches:
- Short shipments (fewer items than expected)
- Damaged goods
- Incorrect products or variants
- Missing documentation
The level of checking varies. Options range from a simple pallet count to a full piece-count verification. Your warehouse should discuss the appropriate level of inspection based on your supplier's reliability and the value of the goods.
Step 4: Palletising and Labelling
Floor-loaded goods need to be sorted and palletised for storage. This includes:
- Building pallets to appropriate heights and weights
- Wrapping pallets with stretch film
- Applying pallet labels with product details, quantities, and storage locations
- Scanning goods into the warehouse management system (WMS)
Step 5: Put-Away
Pallets are moved to their allocated storage locations within the warehouse. The WMS records the exact location of each pallet, providing real-time inventory visibility.
What Affects Container Devanning Costs?
Devanning costs depend on the container type, how goods are packed, and the level of checking required.
Key cost factors:
- Container size — 20ft vs 40ft containers require different labour time and handling
- Loading method — palletised containers are faster and cheaper to devan than floor-loaded containers
- Inspection level — simple pallet count vs full piece-count verification
- Palletising requirements — whether floor-loaded goods need sorting, building, and wrapping onto pallets
Additional costs to consider:
- Haulage from port to warehouse — varies based on the distance between port and warehouse facility
- Port storage charges — if the container is not collected promptly, daily port storage charges apply after the free period
- Customs clearance — if not already arranged by your freight forwarder
Common Devanning Problems and How to Avoid Them
Problem 1: Goods Damaged in Transit
Containers endure rough handling during shipping. Temperature fluctuations, moisture, and shifting loads can damage goods.
Prevention: Ensure your supplier uses appropriate packaging, desiccants for moisture-sensitive goods, and proper load securing. Request photographs of the container being loaded.
Problem 2: Inaccurate Packing Lists
If the packing list does not match what is in the container, your inventory records start wrong and every subsequent process is affected.
Prevention: Require your supplier to provide detailed, accurate packing lists in advance. Include carton-level detail (SKU, quantity, carton number) where possible.
Problem 3: Delays at Port
Containers held by HMRC for inspection, or delayed due to port congestion, can disrupt your planning and incur storage charges.
Prevention: Ensure all customs documentation is prepared in advance. Use a reliable customs broker. Build a 3–5 day buffer into your supply chain timeline.
Problem 4: Slow Warehouse Turnaround
Some warehouses take days to process a received container, leaving your goods unavailable for sale.
Prevention: Agree a service level for devanning turnaround — ideally same-day or next-day. Your goods should be available in the WMS within 24 hours of container arrival.
Choosing a Devanning Partner
When selecting a warehouse for container devanning, consider:
- Proximity to ports — shorter haulage distances reduce costs and speed up availability
- Devanning capacity — can they handle multiple containers per day if needed?
- Turnaround time — how quickly will goods be checked, palletised, and available?
- WMS capability — will you get real-time stock visibility once goods are booked in?
- Additional services — can they also provide storage, fulfilment, and distribution?
Using a single provider for devanning, storage, and onward distribution eliminates the cost and complexity of transferring goods between facilities.
